‘KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON’ AT THE PINES CALYX

A major conference entitled ‘Keeping The Lights On’ will tackle the issue of sustainable energy supply in the 21st century. The event is being held at Kent’s most eco-friendly conference and events venue, The Pines Calyx in St Margaret’s Bay near Dover.

The conference is being organised by Protect Kent, the Kent branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, and takes place on 20 April 2010.

Guest speaker is Sir Crispin Tickell GCMG KCVO, one of the world’s foremost experts on climate change. Sir Crispin performed the opening ceremony at The Pines Calyx in 2006.

Protect Kent’s Gemma Watts said: “We see this event as being about new ways to conserve and generate energy and The Pines Calyx is the perfect living example of low carbon design. We’re very excited to be holding our conference at this unique and inspiring venue. We could not think of a better, more fitting place in Kent to invite people to come along and debate with us the hot topic of energy!”

The audience is expected to be made up of senior figures from the public and private sector in Kent and the South East. On the agenda are the challenges and opportunities of energy supply and security, carbon capture and storage and energy security in Kent.

The Pines Calyx has been hailed as one of the ‘greenest’ conference and events venues in Europe. Built using sustainable materials and methods of construction, the low-carbon venue is surrounded by six acres of tranquil gardens overlooking the cove at St Margaret’s Bay. It has won eight regional, national and international awards and its many ‘green’ features include a computer-controlled ‘virtual daylight’ system, natural air-conditioning, and organically managed gardens.

The cost of attending the conference is £20 for members of CPRE Protect Kent and £100 for non-members. For more information call Protect Kent on 01303 815180 or visit www.protectkent.org.
