CPRE Kent teamed up with the Medway Swale Estuary Partnership on Friday last week (March 27) for a beach-clean on the Thames foreshore at Cliffe. And, goodness, was it needed!

The eye-watering amount of rubbish piled up over years of tidal comings and goings came as a shock to those who had no previous experience of the area but was sadly par for the course for those more familiar with what is an otherwise wonderful place to get away from the urban sprawl.

We were joined by the Kent Archaeological Society, wHoo Cares and RSPB for an event that drew an impressive turnout of more than 40 people.

It is of course a ceaseless battle attempting to keep on top of the vast amounts of refuse that wash up on this stretch of coastline, but between us we did remove a depressingly impressive amount of rubbish, while events such as this do show how much people care about their natural environment.

MSEP runs two beach-cleans a month – one at Cliffe and the other on the Isle of Sheppey. If you would like to take part, email info@msep.org.uk or phone Belinda on 07909 200915.

The picking is in full flow
A lot of rubbish was collected!
The archaeology crew had a doubly great time… this was thought to be a Brylcreem jar from the early 20th century
This apparently is a ‘restorative’ coca (cocaine) wine tonic…
A good morning's work, everyone!
