Woodland Trust campaign environmental damage road scheme would cause

National Highways has applied to the Planning Inspectorate for a Development Consent Order allowing it to start work on the Lower Thames Crossing, sparking the Woodland Trust to launch a petition showing why the proposal is unacceptable.

Ancient woodland, veteran trees and the trust’s Ashenbank Wood reserve are under threat from the proposal. The losses to these habitats and the associated pollution make this probably England’s most harmful road project for ancient woods and veteran trees.

“National Highways has failed to provide any real detail around environmental impacts, instead opting to wait until the last moment when it submits its DCO to the Planning Inspectorate,” says National Highways.
